But an undisciplined person, who has not controlled the mind and senses, can neither have a resolute intellect nor steady contemplation on God. For one who never unites the mind with God there is no peace; and how can one who lacks peace be happy?
– Bhagavad Gita 2:66.
Dear Colleagues,
The meaning as stated in a simple manner by Swami Sivananda Saraswati would be ‘There is no knowledge of the Self to the unsteady and to the unsteady no meditation is possible, and to the unmeditative there can be no peace, and to the man who has no peace, how can there be happiness?’
If the mind and senses constantly wander, our psyche is agitated. An agitated psyche will never allow an intellect to focus. It stands to reason that one who cannot hold on to a single thought, cannot meditate, if the mind is turbulent.
We may feel that there is some repetition here as in the March, May and July communications we find similarity in the shlokas where control of the mind is concerned. But the reason for this repetition is exactly the same as we experience professionally during our journey as Chartered Accountants; i.e. Reading about something and putting it into practice are two different things.
Thus, if we check the train of our thoughts, we realise that even if we read the Gita or any other inspirational book backwards and forwards, it takes lot of time and effort to change the quality and quantity of our thoughts. This message needs to be seared into our brain for us to take it seriously, hence the constant repetition of this point. Very simply put: there is no happiness without control of mind and senses.
WIRC takes this forward in the accounting world by endeavouring to ensure that ‘there is complete professionalism with constant education’.

To achieve any goal in life let it be material or spiritual one needs to be disciplined. Most importantly, what is required is clarity of the goal in a consistent manner. That can’t be achieved without a cooperative instrument. The instrument here is the mind. The mind should be tranquil with a firm focus on realising the goal. Such a tranquil state of mind can only be achieved through disciplined practice.
Only through effort do deeds succeed, not by mere wishes alone. Just as animals do not enter the mouth of a sleeping lion. This shloka emphasises the importance of diligence, effort, and action in achieving success. It encourages professionals to work diligently towards their goals, as success is not attained by mere desires or intentions but by persistent and focused effort.
